Michigan Wolverine Football: Lets Talk Football — Defense Personnel

Lets break down the Michigan Wolverine football roster and get everyone’s thoughts. I am not including true freshmen who have not practiced or players that have recently joined the roster by the ways of transfers.

Defensive Line:

Defensive Ends:

Taco Charlton, Mario Ojemudia with Chris Wormley and Lawrence Marshall as back ups. I would not be surprised if we see a rotation with Wormley and Ojemudia. Mario provides some needed quickness, but is limited against the run. Charlton shows signs of being solid strong side defensive end and Wormley is light years better at defensive end. Marshall has the highest ceiling (IMO).

Defensive Tackles:

Ryan Glasgow had a great spring and combined with Bryan Mone give Michigan a solid 1-tech/Nose Tackle play. At 3-tech, Willie Henry has the most talent. If he ever develops the toughness to match his skills he can be very good. He still get muscled at times (IMO). Back-ups Matthew Godin and Maurice Hurst show well at times. Hurst if he can ad some weight and strength has all the other skills and shows well in one-on-one drills.

Linebackers:

Sam:

James Ross III and Royce Jenkins-Stone will battle for playing time. They are both athletic and show well in drills. Problem is both have a habit of disappearing when it counts. Both have the skills, although Ross is small, but at this point both are better athletes than football players. Don’t be surprised if Jabrill Peppers plays quite a bit in the box, especially in nickle packages.

Mike:

Desmond Morgan is, well Morgan. Not physical impressive, but has a great head for the game. Replacing that will be difficult this year. Ben Gedeon is more than a capable back-up. Mike McCray is probably the best athlete in the group. See Sam, better athlete than football player.

Will:

Joe Bolden is solid, but I thought he would of shown more at this point. Ben Gedeon again gives Michigan a solid back-up.

  • Corner Backs:

Jourdan Lewis is one of top 3 or 4 players on the roster. What I liked was he was noticeably thicker and did not seem to lose any agility or flexibility. Terry Richardson and some others will fight here. I would not be surprised if Brandon Watson steps up and plays. He has the second best skills of the corners.

    Safeties:

I like the starters a lot, Jabrill Peppers and Jarrod Wilson should give Michigan its best safety play in some time. Peppers is the best athlete and highest skilled player on the roster and its not even close. Wilson’s play is solid if unspectacular. But that is good at his position. When healthy Delano Hill was okay. Dymonte Thomas is the biggest tease on the team. One play he is wow and on next you just shake your head. Hoping change in coaching has a positive effect on him. Brandon Watson also played well here, but the loss of Blake Countess (transferred to Auburn) may force him to corner.
