Michigan Wolverine Football: Spring Football — Work To Be Done — DB
The cornerback situation is not fraught with tragedy, but neither is the situation joyous. The depth is a concern; so more parts are needed, even with all of the recent additions of the past two or three years. Along with a 5th year transfer Wayne Lyons, but he won’t arrive until this summer.

The coaching staff will need to determine how many within this group have the potential to play significant minutes and how much attention must be turned to future position recruiting. Just a few years ago, recruits like Terry Richardson were hailed as finally providing Michigan quality and depth at cornerback.
The coaching staff has one ace card every staff would love to possess: Jabrill Peppers. Anyone wondering if he is for real only needs to stand by him for a minute, listen to him talk, and watch five minutes or so of a scrimmage. He understands the game well enough to use his skills to be a force. His ability will allow the staff flexibility in coverage and scheme, placing Jabrill in situations where he can impact.

Jarrod Wilson has good size but has encountered difficulties (as with the entire position group) with assignment, tackling angles and coverage. He is a worker and will not fold up.
Blake Countess last year was not as fast in coverage as before his injury. There seems to be some agreement that Countess is regaining some of his speed and form that made him one of the better freshman backs in the nation. His part will be highly important to Michigan’s overall sucess. Countess is a high quality guy to have on the field and if healthy he can tie up a nice number two when in the nickle. Of course, Peppers will be a force if he plays the nickle position as expected.

Last year, Jourdan Lewis was, over the course of the season, likely the most consistent cornerback for Michigan. He seems to have the speed and positioning ability to hang with good receivers. There is nothing to demonstrate his standing should do nothing but improve.
After this trio, the field is wide open and weak, if evaluating by last year’s play. But another year and the addition of two veteran coaches may cause an improvement among the collection of defensive backs that need improvement.
The parts fitting into Michigan’s scheme are sufficient but not a lock for a great performing unit. If willpower is a factor, and player improvement entails, it may be more fun to watch football at the Big House this fall.
