Michigan’s hockey program needed a bit of home cooking to gain some confidence and got it- dunking AIC twice, splitting with B1G Ten leader Penn State, then skating past RPI 3-2 and 8-0 during the Thanksgiving break. The Wolverines totally blitzed Ohio State last Friday night 8-3 in a game that at one time saw the Buckeyes hold a 2-1 lead. The Maize and Blue busted the game open with five second period goals and chased both the starting and relief goaltenders for the Bucks. Andrew Copp and Alex Kile both tallied twice in a game that finally saw the Wolverines earn their breaks after an auspicious first period. Zach Nagelvoort earned his sixth win on the season.

Eagles Clipped:

Jerry Yorks’s BC club has had a similar start to the season as Michigan as crosstown rival on Commonwealth Ave. (BU) has taken over Hockey East this season. (Both the Wolverines and Eagles have dropped games to the Terriers.) BC has plenty of talent, but seems to be irratic- finishing off good defensive wins at Denver, U-Mass and MSU- while holding a 4-3 home mark, including a loss to BU and a 6-2 drubbing by Minnesota.

D-man teddy Doherty leads the way offensively with 11 points, while three underclass forwards follow with 10 points. The defense is athletic and will jump into the rush. The go-to netminder is Sophomore Thatcher Demko (8-6-1, 2.19 GAA. .922 Save %) who helped Team USA to a medal last season in the World Juniors Tournament. The Eagles appear a year away from maturing into a challenger for the NCAA championship, but has the talent to skate with anyone in the country. Look for a high scoring affair at home with the Wolverines.

Wolverine Notes:

The Wolverines appear to be getting their offensive game in order, scoring 16 goals in their last two games. The special teams appear to be emerging and the defensive effort has been better- although there is still signs of disarray and miscommunication. This game will test it.

Michigan is 4-0 in their last four meetings with BC, including last season’s opening 3-1 win at Yost arena. The Wolverines have not won on BC home ice since 1950, but did win the National Championship in 1998 at the Fleet Center in Boston against these same Eagles.

Coach Red Berenson, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, is 29-22-1 versus Jerry York (including their match-ups while York was in the CCHA at BGSU.)

This will be the final game of the first half of the season. Michigan will next play Michigan Tech at the 50th GLI tournament on December 28th and 29th.
