Michigan Wolverine Football: Couple of Things

This was posted on the message board before the Frank Clark situation … just letting people know.

1) Coach Hoke to his credit has changed up practices this season. Practices throughout the season have been much more physical. One thing he has kept consistent is giving the players some time off during off weeks. Players seem to be very fresh and (maybe overly optimistic I expect Michigan to play its best game this Saturday.

2) Also during off-week practices the “younger” or players down on the depth chart takes many more snaps in some ‘controlled scrimmages’. One player I like who may get some snaps if Clark is unable to play is Poggi.

3) Assuming Frank Clark does not play, Mario Ojemudia becomes a key player against Maryland, but it will be interesting to see if they move Taco or maybe even use Chris Wormley at WDE or play Henry Poggi. Coaches have been happy with Taco’s progress, but still believe he needs to improve on his run defense.

4) Linebacker is a position they really need to upgrade their athleticism moving forward although probably two most athletic LB’s get very little playing time Ben Gedeon and Mike McCray. McCray has done well on special teams and right now he basically practices at same position as Gedeon. I just think next year whoever or DC is will find a way to get both on the field.

5) Defense next year should be not only the strength of the team, but might be the most athletic defense Michigan has put on the field in a long time. With Gedeon and McCray along with Jabrill Peppers and Jourdan Lewis as or starting CB’s you add Taco Charlton, Bryan Mone, Maurice Hurst, on the DL who have pretty good nucleus to start from. Once again, we need to solidify and determine who will be our safeties. I just cannot understand why UM just do not develop safeties.

6) To me it really is amazing at how well Coach Hoke has been able to keep things together and for the most part very positive at the Fort. There is one aspect of coaching Hoke is really one of the best and that is communication between coaches and players. I am sure there are many things Hoke would do differently, but lets at least give him credit where credit is due.

7) I fall in the camp that believes making a bowl game is really important. There are just way too many younger players on this team that could use the additional snaps, most importantly another month of continuing to try and develop a QB for next season.
