Michigan coach Brady Hoke leads a group of assistant coaches, commits and prospects from the 2015 class to the 10th annual two-day Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB) football camp to be held (June 12-13) at the Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods (MI).
More than 500 players and some 2oo coaches from 44 college programs take part in the camp which is far different than others.
First, the camp is not held at a college campus, so coaches can attend.
Academics, Community Involvement
Second, the camp stresses academics and community involvement. Coach Hoke will speak on the concussion problem in college
and pro football, and techniques to prevent them by proper tackling.
Michigan prospects RB Mike Weber, ATH Brian Cole, TE/DL Tyrone Wheatley, Jr., RB Jacques Patrick, OLB Tyric Thompson and commits QB Alex Malzone and ILB Derrick Kirkland, Jr. will be in attendance.
Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio will also be there. Of the five Michigan prospects above, Dantonio has his eyes on four of them. “This camp is a resource, and you’re going to get a lot of the kids, especially from Michigan, here,” Dantonio said. “You’re going to find some guys you didn’t know about, you’re going to find a lot of different kids here, and you’re going to see guys coach, too.”
Stick with the basics
Now in it’s tenth year, SMSB was created to give kids the structure, counseling and exposure to earn scholarships.
“We’re making sure we stick to the basics and stay the No. 1 instructional academy in the country,” said former Wolverine Deon Johnson, an SMSB organizer. After graduating from Detroit King HS, Johnson made 108 tackles for U-M between 1991 and ’94.
“The kids are going to get way more time doing individual work with the college coaches at the academy. That’s what college coaches enjoy the most, working with the kids on an instructional level.”♦
