Michigan Football: Spring Football — Chat Notes — Defensive Backs

Cornerback is one of the most talented position groups on this team and that isn’t even counting Peppers yet. Our overall talent at safety is as good as we can remember, but now just have to put it out on the field this fall.

DefenseJourdan Lewis starts this fall if basing it off of spring practices probably, but not for sure and have to see what happens this summer and fall camp. The development of Lewis actually gives coaches the ability to be more patient with Peppers or try him at another position that might need help such as safety. He could also play the nickel position if needed this year.

We don’t see how Lewis does not start? He is our best cornerback and he is head and shoulders ahead of Blake Countess, Raymon Taylor, Channing Stribling — you name it. Lewis is the one cornerback who can play man coverage. Lewis is our best corner in our opinion and it not close.

So, if anyone says Taylor and Countess are starters, they are just wrong in our opinion because Lewis never came out of the game when the first group was on the field when we was at practices.

Countess seems to be back where he was with his quickness never got quite up to speed last year and he never got comfortable, he was not confident in his ability. This spring he seems much quicker and he played a lot of nickel.

HollowellStribling and Hollowell are doing well, Stribling plays with the first group at times so has Hollowell when they rotate players in and out.

Jarrod Wilson is the starting safety.

Dymonte Thomas is the next favorite but he’s being pushed. Thomas is good, he messed up on one play and was immediately demoted to second group.

Jeremy Clark was on the second team at times as well this spring. Delano Hill has an outside shot at the safety position. Coach Mattison really likes him, he and Clark maybe more physical than Thomas or Wilson. The development of Hill not only puts pressure on Thomas, but also on Wilson who has just been way too inconsistent this spring from the practices we saw.
