Michigan defeated Penn State on Friday night 7-3 behind Zach Hyman’s and Andrew Copp’s two goals each. JT Compher, Michael Downing and Alex Guptill also scored in what could only be described as a “weird” game.
Michigan jumped out 2-0 in the first period, but fell asleep in the 2nd frame and allowed PSU to tie the game on some poor defensive miscues. The Lions thought they took the lead only seconds after tying it, but the goal was waived off. Michigan then scored twice to lead 4-2 after 40 minutes.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 5-2 early in the 3rd period. The Lions scored a controversial goal (Zach Nagelvoort was not only knocked down, but a player remained in the crease when the goal was scored) to cut the lead to 5-3 after the review stood. Michigan salted the game away on an empty netter and then a very late score for the final tally.
With the win, Michigan head coach Red Berenson moved into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time Division I coaching wins list, passing Rick Comley (Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan, Michigan State).
Game 2 today live at 5:00pm on ESPNU (DirecTV Channel 208).
