Michigan football recruiting: Is Malik McDowell headed out of state?

If it’s left up to his parents, Malik McDowell could be headed to Michigan, Ohio State or Florida State.

The decision remains up in the air, but both parents have eliminated Michigan State.

Early Monday, Malik’s dad told 247 sports: “I want him out (of the state of) Michigan. I don’t care if that’s Ohio State or Florida State.”

Malik’s mom sang a slightly different tune later in the day when she was questioned by scout.com. “I don’t prefer that he leave the state. I just prefer that he doesn’t go to Michigan State. If he goes to Michigan, of course I’ll be okay with that. If he goes to Ohio State, I’ll be okay with that. If he goes to Florida State, I’ll be okay with that.

“Just anywhere but Michigan State.”

Which will make things interesting around the house the next few nights. National Signing Day is Wednesday.

While Michigan remains in the mix, you can’t discount the strength of Ohio State’s program, especially with Urban Meyer in charge.

Meyer has already pilfered four-star cornerback Damon Webb from Detroit Cass Tech, which has been a great Michigan pipeline over the years, even more so  since former Michigan running back Thomas Wilcher  became coach of the Technicians.

And Florida State, of course, is the current national champion.

Should he choose Michigan, McDowell (6-6, 292) could play either defensive end position or three-tech defensive tackle.  He’s basically a larger version of South Carolina’s Jadevon Clowney (6-5, 258). Like Clowney, he may play several positions, depending on the offensive set. His specially is the pass rush, and the Wolverines could use plenty of help there. ♦
