After 51 days away from Yost Ice Arena, Michigan will finally play a home game this weekend with a series against No. 9 Wisconsin, beginning on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
Michigan concludes its longest gap between home games since the 1962-63 season, when the Wolverines went 56 days between home games from Dec. 15, 1962, to Feb. 8, 1963. The Badgers return to Michigan for the first time since Nov. 29, 2009. In that contest, Michigan earned a 3-2 win on goals by Matt Rust, Luke Glendening and Louie Caporusso
Michigan is 0-3-1 against Wisconsin since that contest, including a series sweep at the Kohl Center on Jan. 10-11 in the first Big Ten games between the two schools.
On Friday night, Michigan and Wisconsin will meet for the 125th time in a series that dates back to Jan. 12, 1923, when Michigan played its fi rst varsity game against the Badgers. The Wolverines are 63-54-7 in the all-time series against Wisconsin, including a 32-14-5 record at Yost Ice Arena.
Wisconsin features three of the top 10 scorers in the Big Ten, including Mark Zengerle (3G, 21A), Michael Mersch (14G, 10A) and Tyler Barnes (10G, 11A) Zengerle leads the league in assists, and Mersch is the Big Ten leader in goal-scoring. Forward Nic Kerdiles (8G, 9A) was a teammate of Andrew Copp’s on Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden.
The Michigan-Wisconsin series will pit two of the Big Ten’s top goaltenders against one another. U-M freshman goaltender Zach Nagelvoort is 8-5-1 on the season and started both games last week against Michigan State. He leads the Big Ten with a .935 Save % and is second with a 1.98 GAA. Wisconsin junior goaltender Joel Rumpel (11-2-0, 1.95 GAA, .927 Save %) leads the Big Ten in goals-against.
Michigan is 3-3-2 against ranked competition this season but has not beaten an opponent ranked in the USCHO.com poll since a 2-1 win over No. 13 Boston University on Oct. 25. Michigan is 1-0-1 against top-10 teams this season.
