Michigan Football: 2014 Roster — Grades — Defense — Part I

As I wrote this two things became clear. Michigan is really young on defense. The numbers returning is huge. The number of players who were forced to play early and burn a Red-shirts.

Defensive Ends:

Lost: None
Returning: Charlton, Strobel, Ojemudia, Clark, Heitzman, Godin, Wormley
Additions: Marshall

Outlook:

Michigan has to generate more pressure. Looking at the group only Charlton and Ojemudia have the skill to get this done. Clark will help, but doubt at this point he becomes a fierce edge rusher. The rest are basically strong side defensive ends who will help against the run.

Score: Improved against the run, wash against the pass.

Defensive Tackles:

Lost: Black, QWash and Maybe Ash
Returners: Poggi, Wormley, Godin, Pipkins, Henry, Hurst
Additions: Pallante and Mone

Outlook:

Losing your two starters always hurts, if just from experience point. We have been saying that most of our talent is in freshmen and sophomores. And it is time for them to step up. They are better athletes and have the frames to add the weight. No more excuses, time to grow up.

Score: Expect some early growing pains. By game 4 or 5 they need to be better than last seasons group.

Part II we will discuss the Linebacker, Cornerbacks, and Safeties.
