Michigan Football: Michigan at Northwestern — Preview
What May Happen — Time to Get Out the Ouija Board
Like last week, writing a pristine, precise prediction for Saturday’s game is close to wishful thinking. One may do better betting out the dusty old Ouija board. What may happen is however more predictable than who will win. Both teams can be had through the air. Both teams are somewhat soft in the middle against the run, probably equally so. Both teams have linebackers that have some trouble against good teams in space.
Michigan has not defended Northwestern well the last two years and have depended on a big play and wearing down the Northwestern defense the last two years.
The old assumption that NW does not have talent is false. The talent level is not elite, but the team has very good skill players and the defense plays together. This means that Northwestern can hang with good but not great teams. Michigan is obviously not a great team. So, how will Alchemist Al approach the game plan? More than likely the offense will open up early with the run like last week. If the offense stalls, Um will go to the air. The question for Michigan is stopping the inside read series and not letting the Northwestern quarterback and tailback get to the edge.
The weather looks fine, so expect the score to be at least in the mid to high 20’s for both teams.
It could be a nice game for entertainment value, or the game may end up representing something else.
