Michigan Football: Twelve Wondrous Wolverines — #8 — Steve Hutchinson — Beast of Beasts
Steve Hutchinson is number eight on the Wondrous Wolverine list. Steve had a ton of serious competition including, David Baas, Jon Jensen, Jumbo Elliot, Jake Long, Dan Dierdorf, and Reggie McKenzie. Hutchinson gets the nod from this list.
Steve Hutchinson played from 1997-2000, after receiving a redshirt season in 1996. He was a member of the great line of the late 1990’s.
Steve Hutchinson was a four-year All Big Ten selection, a rarity of the highest regard, one of the deciding factors for being included on this list. Hutch was the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the year and a two-time All American. In addition, Hutchinson was a two-time team captain and much was made about how few sacks he gave up while at Michigan.
Hutchinson moved on to have a splendid and long career in the NFL, being named All Pro seven times.
There was nothing mysterious about Steve Hutchinson. He just lined up and smacked an opponent, or pass blocked as good as any player in program history.
The backs that ran behind guys like Elliot, Baas, and Hutchinson were more than fortunate. The new Michigan backs are hoping for just such a luxury.
Steve Hutchinson, was certainly the best guard in Michigan history and arguably the best lineman. Like most linemen his story is short and simple, but his results were magnificent.
