Michigan Football: Tidbits from MaizeMan — Spring Practice Recap — Players Under The Radar

Thought I would do a series of spring practices recap stuff I have not posted yet or giving personal evaluations of a series of practices.

First one will be the topic:

PLAYERS UNDER THE RADAR WHO MADE AN IMPRESSION

1) Delonte Hollowell:

It all started when Michigan during coaches clinic ran a version of the Michigan drill in which the CB’s had to get off blocks from WR’s and tackle the RB. It was a very physical drill and was heavily weighted to the advantage of the WR and RB. During that drill, Hollowell was the clear winner and at least to me, showed despite his lack of size he was certainly physical enough to handle tackling in open field.

As spring practices continued, he started to stand out as our best CB in “man coverage”. Keep in mind that Countess is still not practicing, but both Taylor and Avery are more suited for zone coverages so that opened up an opportunity for someone to stand out in man coverage and Hollowell fit the bill.

By the end of spring, Hollowell at times was playing with the ones and coaches challenged him by frequently putting him in isolation so he had to cover man. Look for him to be in the rotation in fall.

Keep an eye on this one, but hear me out on this. This year we have M-Rob, T. Gordon, and Wilson who is going to get majority of snaps at safety. Dymonte, at least for now, is our dime back and making a move at CB so that leaves 2 out of our 3 safeties are Seniors. Not seeing the incoming freshman and assuming Thomas eventually wins a job a CB, Clark right now is our #4 safety and is probably our most physical safety right now. In addition, he has shown good enough speed to play at that position.

My feelings on Clark is that he is a football player and I actually think he would make a great SAM LB.

7) Willie Henry:

One thing for sure, Henry seems like the favorite player for Hoke to “coach” in the spring. And Henry of all the kids seem to play the most snaps, mostly with the 2nd group, but also with the first group. What a great kid to pick up late in the recruiting process, not only can he stuff the run, but he is pretty good considering his size at rushing the passer or at least collapsing the pocket. I look for Henry to be a major part of the rotation next fall.
