Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Drew Dileo — Slot Receiver — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations

GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.

GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Drew Dileo and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.

Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Receivers) we will not evaluate #27 Jonathan Keizer, #85 Joe Reynolds, and #96 Baquer Sayed. If you would like to chat about this player bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.

Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.

Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: Junior Hemingway (NFL – Chiefs), Martavious Odoms, Kelvin Grady, and Darryl Stonum (Discipline Reasons).

Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: Jehu Chesson, Amara Darboh, and Devin Funchess (TE/Slot).

Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Jaron Dukes and Csont’e York.

Drew Dileo is a very smart and tough football player. Drew is small, in the slot dot mode, but he always finds a way to contribute. Drew gives everything he has and does what is asked of him. He is not the most ideal receiver for this offense, but once again he seems to find his niche in this offense, get open, find the right spot, and catch the ball.

His obvious niche is slot receiver, but he is a valuable contributor on special teams as both returner and PAT holder. It is always good to have on the roster players who can play multiple positions. It is also valuable to have players willing and able to play special teams, a task many players find displeasing. In contrast, Drew just seems to really have a great attitude and does what is asked of him; he just gets it done.

Drew makes up for a lack of size and a lack of great speed with quickness, good hands, and better than average route running. He gets into the soft part of the defense and really seems to find the open spot.

Drew’s size, as well as Denard’s size and skill set, have contributed to modest numbers for Dileo. When in the pocket, it is probably difficult for Denard to find Drew. Junior Hemingway being about seven inches taller was the target Denard always locked on to when pocket passing. When Denard scrambled he usually had no problem finding Dileo who was frequently open.

Drew will continue to contribute this year and to what extent he plays a role in the passing game cannot be easily predicted. But Drew will be ready and able if the ball comes his direction.
