GBMWolverine: Mailbag Question — Michigan Football Recruiting — Why not offer Ron Thompson (TE)
With the problems we have had with tight end recruiting this year of either losing Brown, or not being able to find another high quality replacement, why hasn’t the staff gone after Ron Thompson who was around the program a lot this past spring and also a highly regarded tight end from the state of Michigan.
I realize he has committed to Syracuse, but you would think Michigan could get him to change his mind and be closer to home for family, friends, and his high school coaches to follow him at Michigan.
Well we think Michigan still has a legit shot at signing Cleveland St. Edward’s tight end Sam Grant.
We really like Grant and what he brings, most notably he is a bigger tight end, but not too big where he cannot be a factor in the passing game.
As for Thompson, in our opinion he is a classic tweener, not quite the frame to add enough weight to handle blocking defensive linemen and not quite athletic enough to be a wide receiver.
With Devin Funchess already committed to Michigan, we just do not think Michigan needs two players with similar size and skill set. This spring when both Funchess and Thompson were visiting practices it came down to whoever would get the coveted scholarship offer. With this offense (Modified West Coast) UM relies on an athletic tight end that can be a good combination of run blocking and also being effective in the passing game.
