GBMWolverine: Mailbag Question — Michigan Football — Formation and Rotation
Thanks for all the reports and information from practice, either on the board or in chats.
What I am wondering is what are some of the packages the defensive coaches will be using this year and who are the players that will be used in the packages?
Will we see a lot of different packages?
Will we see a lot of different players rotating in and out?
What is the rotation, if any, for the packages?
Thank you Fred, many have been wandering not only who will play (the famous two-deep chart) but also want to know when certain players will be used and how (packages).
We expect to see multiple fronts and schemes used this season. That is Coach Mattison’s history. He believes in moving the defense and we expect to see 3, 4, 5, and even some 6-man fronts.
We also expect to see Michigan use some specialty player packages.
One example would be Ryan Van Bergen sliding inside to a 3-tech defensive tackle, moving Craig Roh to the strong-side defensive end, and installing somebody like Frank Clark at rush defensive end.
In the spring the staff also took out Will Campbell and Mike Jones and brought in Brandon Herron, moved RVB inside, and brought in Thomas Gordon as the nickel back.
Also in the spring we saw the staff move Mike Martin all around the defensive line to try and not let the offense key on him, and prevent the opponent from knowing where he would line up on every single play. GBMWolverine has been informed the staff is doing the same thing with Jibreel Black as well this fall.
We are sure the coaches are trying multiple schemes and moving players around to try and confuse the offense, as well a finding out the best combo’s. A goal is to get as much pressure on the quarterback as possible to force him into making a quick decision with the football before he is ready. Throwing off he offense’s timing and the quarterbacks execution.
