Mailbag question: Coach Mattison at a local clinic

Hi,

Great site, love the chats and your insights.

Read recently that Coach Mattison said “He was shocked in first few film sessions by the inability of players to watch film correctly. ” I know it’s probably a college level course worth of knowledge to transfer but could you explain the correct way to watch film? What is the Coach seeing and what was he expecting?

Thanks,
Bob Elkins

GBMWolverine Response:

Well this is informed guess on our part since we were not in attendance, but we did get word from one who was at a recent clinic that Coach Mattison attended.

We are basing our answer on information we have heard Coach Mattison discuss in the past and what we have emphasized in film break down.

As far as players go, most players have a habit of concentrating on themselves rather than seeing the big picture and do not concentrate enough on technique miscues but instead missed assignments. Assignments are usually fixed on the field and film is used to help correct poor fundamentals.

Film is also used to help teach what opponents are successful at, determine the type of blocks that are used against certain defenses, and what should be done to combat offensive strategies.

The information below came to our attention from a kind poster, TriRy4, who attended a recent clinic that both Coach Hoke and Coach Mattison were part of and seems to lay out some of the problems identified after watching last year’s game film.

Coach Hoke and his staff were at the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic last Friday evening, however, it sounded like they were heading out to parts unknown that evening. So here is his take-

Best part was that I was able to spend about ninety minutes with Coach Mattison. What a great guy, plus he gave some great insight for the upcoming year. Here is a breakdown of the conversations that I and about four other high school coaches had with him.

Things we already knew … Michigan will employ a 4-3 under look. This will look like a 5-2 to many, however, the Sam linebacker will be on the line (TE side) with linebacker responsibilities.

Things we may not have known … Paraphrasing Coach Mattison the best I can from memory.

1) M. Martin will love this defense, as opposed to getting his head bashed in with last year’s defense.

2) Not sure what the deal was with Will Campbell last year, but he should fit perfect in the 3-tech. He is winning most group competitions. Apparently was not skinny enough to play in last year’s scheme. Tried to move him to offensive line last year, but reminds Coach Mattison of Haloti Ngata– 6’5″ 345 lbs. WC that is.

3) C. Roh is a perfect fit for rush end (we already knew this).

4) Cameron Gordon looks like a good fit at SLB instead of safety. Perfect body type and athleticism for this spot.

Couple other little nuggets/tidbits:

1) Will hit more than they’ve ever hit. Not necessarily tackling to the ground everyday, but will hit everyday — This is confirmation from what MaizeMan told everybody on our message board several weeks ago that this team will hit more in practices.

2) Will run pursuit drills everyday until perfected — Again something MaizeMan told everybody on our message board.

3) Shocked in first few film sessions by the inability of players to watch film correctly.

Thanks to TriRy4 for sharing the information, he gathered at the clinic that he attended that helped to frame this answer, along with our first-hand information whenever we have dealt with Coach Mattison.
